Subhan’Allah! Children seem to grow up so fast these days. My eldest two are currently 11 and 9 years old and at this age it gets more and more difficult to protect them from the hard, cold realities of the world.
As a family, we don’t watch a huge amount of TV but it is a habit for myself and my husband to watch the news in the evenings and lately, as the Ishaa prayer gets later on in the evening, our eldest two children join us in watching the news. And there was no escaping, nor explaining away their questions regarding the recent despicable actions of the extremist Nigerian group, Boko Haram who have kidnapped over 200 school girls and are still holding them hostage.
We explained that there are some very misguided Muslims who believe that they are doing actions to bring about the establishment of Allah’s Law on Earth but in actual fact they are opposing Allah’s Law and violating the Sunnah of the Messenger, sall’Allahu alayhi wasalam.
We also explained that the Prophet warned the Muslims that such extremist groups would emerge (the Khawaarij) and that the Muslims upon the Truth would always fight them and oppose them.
As a parent and a Muslim it is my responsibility to teach my children about these extremist groups and to help them recognise their evil traits and actions so that they do not fall into the path of Shaytaan. The only way to do this is to first educate myself.
I recently listened to a short audio clip on Youtube from Abu ‘Abdis-Salaam al-Juyaanee titled: Refutation Against Boko Haram.
I also read this very beneficial book which was published on the Salafi Manhaj.com website which you can download in PDF format titled: Boko Haraam In Nigeria: It’s beginnings, principles and activities in Nigeria.
Unfortunately, there are many extremist, Khareeji, Takfiri groups emerging amongst the Muslims and we must do all we can to prevent them from spreading their evil daw’ah and even more to protect our youth from following their wicked ideologies. You can educate yourselves and others by finding out more at Islam Against Extremism.com.
May Allah protect us and protect our children from the evils of extremism and from following the paths of the Shaytaan. May He keep us firmly upon the Straight Way, the Middle Way, the Way of the Righteous Predecessors, ameen.
