Computer Lapbook

This is my son, Yusef’s lapbook all about how computers work. He put this lapbook together with help from the book ‘What is a Computer?’ by Jim Drake.

The lapbook covers:

  • History of Computers
  • Parts of a Computer
  • Bits and Bytes
  • Input & Output Devices
  • Data Storage
  • Processing
  • Operating Systems

This lapbook was made by folding an A3 sheet of card in half and taping an A4 sheet of card into the centre.

The first mini-book is all about the History of Computers. The very earliest computers didn’t even run on electricity!

Then there is a double flap all about ‘bits’ and ‘bytes’ – 8 bits make 1 byte.

On the next page is a double flap about operating systems. Two operating systems are Windows and Mac OS.

Then there is a flap folded in half containing details on processing and memory.

Also on the same page is a layered flap book all about the 4 main parts of a computer and how they work: input devices, processing devices, output devices and storage devices.

Then the centre page turns over to reveal the page of details on Input and Output Devices and on the opposite page (and the reverse) is a glossary of words related to computers.

Here are a couple of small flaps containing details of 2 input devices: mice and keyboard.

This is the shutter book all about output devices such as monitors and printers.

Next is a set of cards that I hole-punched and strung together containing details on data storage devices such as floppy disks, CD-roms and Hard Drives.

Finally on the last page and the reverse of the lapbook is a glossary of computer-related words.

If you would like to make a similar lapbook, you can find all the templates available to download for free from my File Share widget which you will see as you scroll down the menu bar on the right of the screen.

ICT Books for Kids

A very dear friend of mine, also a home-school mum, recently introduced me to a brilliant discount book website called The Book People where you can save as much as 80% on books.

I bought this wonderful set of 4 books called ‘Computer Wizards’ for my kids. It introduces them to the basics of ICT. The books explain two important Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel) as well as how to navigate around Microsoft Windows in general and how to use the internet.

The books are aimed at ages 5-7 years.

The titles in this set are:

  • Word Magic
  • Windows Magic
  • Excel Magic
  • Internet Magic

These really are a very useful set of books to have. They are colourful and easy to understand. You can buy the books here.
